Non-revenue water (losses) are costing South Africa.
Non-revenue water (NRW)
= treated water that is used, but not paid for by end-users.
Since indigent neighborhoods do not pay for the treated water they use, lots of non-revenue water occurs within indigent neighborhoods.
It's truly difficult for South African Municipalities to keep a record of the individual water bills within indigent neighborhoods because there are just too many households to count every month!
Our non-revenue water research findings in Orange Farm prove that the City of Johannesburg pays Joburg Water an average of R1250 per household per month, adding to non-revenue water.Â
